For tourists to the Lake District that are heading to the town of Ambleside, there is lots to see and do. Whether you are heading there for a romantic long weekend, an activity break or your yearly two week main vacation, there would be plenty to see, do and sample in the Lake District.
Ambleside is situated right at the northern tip of the largest of England's lakes. It is a paradise for walkers, climbers, cyclists and water enthusiasts alike. When you approach the region you will pass scores of people taking part in a lot of alternative sports and appreciate the range of activities that take in the surrounding areas.
On arrival in Ambleside itself there are a widespread selection of shops in which to stock up on equipment. From the vast and well known sporting shops to small shops. From high class hotels serving excellent afternoon high tea, to cafes and patisseries. Second hand book shops, newsagents and everything else that you might need. There is plenty of shopping to be had in the immediate location.
Head out a short way from the town itself and you might see cannoists trying their skills on the rivers that feed the lake. There are furthermore heaps of walking routes that guide you directly into the hills from the town, excellent for those not wishing to add to the levels of traffic by driving around to start their walks.
From Ambleside you can join lots of alternative boat trips down the lake or hire a boat for your personal use. Maybe get a boat to the popular town of Bowness on Windermere or further down the lake to visit the Aquarium and steam train. For the active, a walk back from Bowness is by a long way managable, either the direct course or get the ferry across the lake and walk around the top end of Lake Windermere for a longer walk back. Why not do both and miss out the boat trip to Bowness? Without difficulty manageable!
Whilst in Ambleside you may possibly instead opt to hire bikes for your party and go dashing around the numerous lanes and cycle paths that criss cross the region. Plan your path to stop at and take a break for a thirst-quenching cold drink in one of the many outlaying pubs in the neighborhood. A well earned break or two on a grueling day out. The local pubs are used to customers turning up, covered in mud. It is expected of their clientelle so do not be upset by this possibility.
There are also some more high adrenaline thrills that you might be fascinated in that take place in and around the district. Rock climbing is a popular pasttime, with many scaling the rocks. Whilst numerous other people will strap a parachute to their backs and descend the local cliffs in their craving of experiencing the sport of parascending. All of this, and look out for the RAF flying its fast jets on instruction sorties up the lake and all-around the local hills. There are definitely a broad diversity of sports to sample!
