Product development for cell phones has reached a point where most consumers want their phones to have cameras, touchscreens, QWERTY keyboards, high speed Internet accessibility, games, and MP3 players. What they don't want are rubber keypads that wear out quickly. Whether the keys are back-lit or not, if the markings on the keypads wear off after a month and the keys break, the customer will not be happy with the products or the manufacturing company when they are seeking to buy a new cellphone.
I have replaced the keypad on my smart phone many times, but I use it everyday. I surf the web, I update my blogs, I check facebook, I text constantly, I take pictures of my children, I take pictures of houses, I send picture messages, I listen to music, I USE my smart phone.
Cellphone technologies are moving forward and the directions being most focused on in the marketplace are no longer easy to predict. They are going to be driven by consumer demands. Apple has realized this to a degree with the products that they have designed using consumer feedback. However, the products that have flopped in the market are because of the lack of customer desire, inability to be useful and expense. Some products are simply outdated and have not stayed ahead of the trends.
If you are too far ahead of the trends, though, you face the risk of being ahead of your time. I can name two smart phone manufacturers that did that. One with the idea of checking email and having them sent as text messages and another that utilized a touch screen interface with a QWERTY keyboard. Those two were responsible for the revolution that is currently underway in the cellular marketplace. While those two are still big players in the field, they fell behind the iPhone because of the use of 'aps' that Apple promoted and the refusal of Apple to allow other manufacturers phone to access the permissions from the iTunes store.
Sadly, I have many friends with shattered touchscreens on their iPhones and who are no longer happy Apple customers, while my other smart phone user friends are satisfied with the choices they made for their smart devices. I believe that cellphones will continue to hold a large share of the market and that rubber keypads will be a necessary part because of their strength and durability. I do not want to stop having a smart phone, but some people only need a device for talking. Imagine that!
