If you are looking to buy a drum set for the first time or you are looking to buy a new drum set to replace your existing set, there are many important things you need to know before you start to shop. You want to get as much as you can out of a drum set for the minimum amount of money.

It is first important to understand what you should be looking for. A standard drum set often times comes with five pieces.

Within these five pieces you will get a bass drum, a snare drum, tom-toms, a floor tom, one ride cymbal, one crash cymbal and two hi-hat cymbals. These are the basic instruments that sill come with your drum set but you will also need hardware.

The snare that you buy will need a snare stand. This stand will allow the snare to function correctly because the air flow will not be impeded by it sitting on the floor.

Next you will need to have a cymbal stand. The cymbals are going to be higher than the rest of your drums, and you want to make sure that they have wing nuts for the tops.

If you are playing the cymbals without the wing nuts on the top, the cymbals may fly off of the stand. To avoid any injury to you or a band member, do not forget the wing nuts.

You will also need a foot petal for your bass drum. You will not be playing the bass drum with your drumsticks.

The only way you should be playing your base drum is with the pedal. The pedal will have a little tool on it that looks like a mallet and will bang the bass drum.

The Hi Hat cymbals will also need a stand. Because of the way the stand for the Hi Hat cymbals is built you will not need wing nuts.

The Hi Hat cymbals should not come off of their stand when you are playing. You will play the Hi Hat cymbals with a pedal also.

This petal will trigger a mechanism that hits the two cymbals against one another. This will create a different sound than the cymbals that you are hitting with your drumsticks.

Instead of a wing nut for the Hi Hat cymbal you will need to make sure that the stand has a clutch that will hold the top Hi Hat cymbal away from the bottom cymbal. This allows for the two cymbals to hit each other and make the music.

Your tom-tom drums are going to be mounted onto your base drum. You will need a mounting device so that they stay in place securely.

These drums you will be playing with your drumsticks and they will make a significantly different sound than the bass drum that they sit on top of.

You will need a seat, or what are often times referred to as a throne, to sit on while you play. It is necessary that you have something to sit on while you play because you will need to be able to use your feet on the different pedals.

Some people prefer to save the money and just use a chair. There are a lot of benefits to saving money but there are also a lot of benefits to using a seat made specifically for playing the drums.

These seats will give you the optimal amount of range of motion. By using one of these seats you will be sitting level with the drums and you will also be in a position to play the drums with more ease.

When you are buying your drum set you want to make sure you stick with reputable dealers. It is not worth it to buy faulty drums and not have the ability to return them.

You also want to make sure that you have a guarantee on y our drum set. Often times the most beneficial guarantees will provide free repairs up to a certain amount of time.

If you are going to skimp on the brand name materials in any department you will want to do this with the cymbals. The brand name cymbals are very expensive and if you are just starting to drum the expensive cymbals will not be necessary.

If you are looking for starter cymbals you can often times find cymbal "packs". These packs will come with cymbals in groups of 2 to 4 and are a good inexpensive way to purchase starter cymbals.
