My wife is really big into self sufficiency and sustainability. She spends hours doing research and trying to find ways to get more things done ourselves without relying on others, especially if relying on others means tapping our bank account. I can't say I disagree; I would rather do most things myself unless we're going to profit from having someone else do them for us.
As for car maintenance and repair, I have been leaving most of that to a friend of mine who decided to create such a business several years ago, but the current economy has caused him to raise his prices, and while he is my friend and I want to help him out, I would much rather save the money to invest in my own family.
She was doing some research the other day and came across brake bleeder kits. These kits make bleeding the brakes on a car extremely easy and affordable. By way of explanation, brakes need to be bled if air has somehow gotten into the brake lines. The air makes the brakes sluggish, compromising their efficiency and safety and making it difficult to stop the car quickly.
If someone were to dart out in front of the car when there is air in the brakes, it would be almost impossible to stop in time to keep from hitting them. It can be a matter of life and death, and I would much rather bleed my brakes than make someone else bleed because my brakes don't work.
My wife was pretty excited to find this information. She hasn't done much by way of car repair, but after reading the information, she felt pretty confidant that she could bleed our brakes if needs be. I thought it might be a fun project to do together, since neither of us have any real experience with it. Learning how to bleed brakes together might not sound very romantic, but projects like that are the things that actually bring couples closer together.
For now, our brakes are good, but I can see us buying a brake bleeder kit in the near future. My wife was pretty excited when she saw how easy it was, and she loves learning new things and tackling new projects. On the bright side, if she gets pretty good at using the brake bleeder kit, I may not have to do anything at all!
