One of my good friend started a business some time ago where he goes out on location and changes his customer's oil and fluids in their cars. It saves them a lot of trouble, because instead of them having to schedule time in a garage and go through the downtime and inconvenience of having to wait for their car, they can be at work, at home, or wherever while he performs the job.
He is a pretty good mechanic and can handle a lot of repairs as well. Because of our friendship, he has always given me a break on pricing, but with the economy being what it is, he is no longer willing to give discounts. I don't blame him, as times are tough, and I hope he doesn't blame me if I start changing the oil and fluids on my own.
The one area where I have difficulty is the brakes. I know how to take care of the oil and lubrication, but brakes are a bit different. On top of that, I happen to know that my wife likes it when we do things on our own instead of relying on others, and doing her brakes would be a huge investment in her emotional bank account. Not only that, but it can be a fun thing to do with my children, and I think it would be great if my daughters knew how to do their own brakes when they've all grown up.
