I have heard a pretty good definition of the difference between eastern and western medical philosophies. According to this definition, western medicine is concerned with treating and healing illness, which eastern medicine is concerned with preventing illness from ever happening. I liken this definition to the philosophies of automobile maintenance and automobile repair.

If an owner properly maintains their vehicle, following the recommended oil changes, tune ups, and diagnostics, they will save a lot of time, effort, and money on repairs. Just like the human body, proper care and awareness can help prevent issues from developing into problems, and that saves a lot of expense and discomfort.

Here is a case in point. I had a friend who drove her car for quite a while without ever checking or changing her oil. When the oil light came on, she really didn't know what it meant and didn't bother to find out, just figuring she would ask her father or someone else about it later. She drove the car in this condition until one day, she tried to start it and it would only buzz.

The battery was charged and the starter was trying to do its work, but the engine wouldn't budge. She had the car towed to an auto repair place only to find that the engine had entirely seized up and wouldn't budge. There was nothing else for it; she needed a brand new engine. Had she taken the time to educate herself about some automotive basics and had even taken the minor step of checking her oil once a month, she would have caught the problem before it ever happened, and instead of paying a couple of dollars for a fee quarts of oil, she ended up forking out a pile to get the engine replaced.

The moral of that story is to learn about your car. Even if you aren't a car person and have no interest in performing your own maintenance, find out what all of your lights and warnings mean. If you aren't going to check and change your own oil and fluids, find a good Newark auto service shop and follow their recommended course of maintenance. Spending a little on your car every month will keep you from spending a lot unnecessarily, and when breakdowns do happen, the cost and time of repair will be much less because your car will have been well-maintained.
