Need to replace an ATV CV joint? Here's how.
Secure and jack the ATV off of the ground so you can easily remove the wheel. Next remove the axle nut--the large one on the outside of the hub--and then take the lower control arm bolt off the hub assembly. The hub will swing away so that the axle can be removed through the back.
A tap on the threaded end of the outer CV joint may be needed (put the axle nut halfway back on first to protect the threads). You'll have to take out the inner U-joint, which will be the only thing still holding the axle in position, by knocking out the roll pin. Now you can take the axle off the stub shaft.
After the axle has been removed, grab hold of the CV axle by the shaft and hit the outer joint off the shaft using a 5-lb sledge hammer. Remember to wear safety glasses. If one or two swings of the hammer won't move it, try putting the axle in a vise. If that doesn't work, break the cage and remove the ball bearings to expose the race. Press the race off the shaft and use a punch and hammer (or a press) to punch the shaft through the race again.
Once the joint is removed, cut off the boot and clamps so you can fully clean the shaft. Insert the new boot, sliding it toward the inner joint. Squirt grease into the hole where the shaft will be placed (cut a corner of the grease packet and squeeze). Fill the outer CV joint with the grease, and put some on the "C" clip on the shaft. This will help it to stay centered. Line the outer CV joint up with the splines of the shaft and check that the clip is not sticking out to one side.
Set the axle nut halfway onto the threads and gently tap the joint back into place on the shaft. If it doesn't slide on easily, use a screw driver to tap the clip until it is no longer exposed. The joint should go right on.
Lather the top of the joint where it meets the shaft using the remaining grease. Slide the boot down and clamp the large clamp. Use a screw driver to release any trapped air or suction pressure between the end of the boot and the shaft. Now put on the small clamp. Finally, install the axle by reversing the steps for taking it off.
