It is nothing new to see wind mills and wind turbines of old and new technology. But, there is a new kid on the block is emerging for areas where constant wind is not an abundant, nor a constant source. This advancement in wind turbine technology is called the aero-turbine.

Windmills or wind turbines are great for very windy areas of the world, cities and towns near oceans do quite well with respect to harnessing wind energy to convert into electricity. The aero-turbines however, have addressed some of the problems with windmill technology. The noise they generate is reduced significantly, and these new models virtually eliminate any threat to birds which often fall victim to the gigantic blades of the wind turbine. There is also the issue of harnessing wind on the top of high buildings where it is not possible to place a wind turbine due to the of the enormity of the systems as well as the cost involved.

This new technology is a double-helix wind turbine, which is designed to be placed on the tops of tall buildings to harvest energy from the wind. The propellers are not the same as the large blades of turbines, they are kind of like the electric egg-beater if you were trying to describe the look of the propeller to someone. They are safe for birds and can harness wind from multiple-directions, and unusual gusts will still be useful for the generation of energy.

These systems are not expected to be high maintenance and the selling feature is their cost effectiveness and ease of production. In addition, aero-turbines are not be inhibited by snowfall, which will make them useful in areas where snow is a major factor most of the year. A wind of about 6 miles per hour will start one working and there is no need for a continuous wind. Aero-turbines also have a feature which will regulate them during high winds should the turbine begin going into over-speed mode.

Aero-turbines can be set up to be used with solar PV (photovoltaic) systems. They are able to be installed vertically or horizontally which means they can be integrated easily into any existing structure. The efficiency depends on how high above ground they are, forty feet is the recommendation and they shouldn't be in the vicinity of anything that will obstruct the wind.

Aero-turbines should be available soon for all types of applications, homes, industries and institutions, etc. It will be great to see this new technology implemented all over the world to help move towards cleaner, renewable energy sources.
