If you've ever been in a shoe store and compared the selection of men and women's shoe styles, you've probably noticed a marked difference. Most women love shoes and like to have a lot of choices when it comes to footwear.

Because many women are more concerned with fashion than comfort, women's shoe styles come in a huge variety of styles, shapes, and colors. Though every shoe is different, most women's shoes can be classified in a few consistent categories. Listed below are a few common women's shoe styles.

The Pump

Although there is no official definition of what a pump shoe should look like, the term "pump" has come to represent a certain style of shoe. A pump is typically a low-cut heeled shoe. A pump is also typically without any type of fastenings. The generic term "high-heel" is also often used when referring to a style of shoe that is a pump.

The Flat

Initially inspired by ballet flats, a "flat" style of shoe is a versatile form of footwear that can come in all shapes, sizes, and designs. Flats can be both casual and formal, depending on the design. A flat is similar to a pump in that it is enclosed and generally without any fastenings. However, unlike a pump a flat has no heel, as the name would suggest. Flats are similar to a slipper.

The Mary Jane

The term "Mary Jane" is an American term for a very particular style of shoe. A Mary Jane is a shoe that is styled after traditional shoes worn by schoolgirls in the early 20th century. They typically have low heels and a round enclosed toe, although some modern Mary Jane shoes might include a heel. The trademark of a Mary Jane shoe is a single-buckle strap that sits across the instep of the foot or occasionally across the ankle.

The Stiletto

A stiletto is a type of shoe characterized by a thin and sharp high heel. The term "stiletto" usually refers more to the heel than the actual shoe, as stilettos can be found on boots as well as regular high heels. Stilettos are named after a certain type of dagger with a long and thin blade. Because the heel resembles the blade of the dagger, the name stuck.

The Sandal

A sandal is a shoe with an open toe and back. Sandals have a wide variety of straps and fastenings and typically have a flat heel. Although sandals are generally considered a more casual shoe, some sandals are designed to be worn with more formal outfits.
