In the current economic climate, it can be hard to find a job. So if you're lucky enough to find yourself starting a new auditing job then here are some general tips to help you succeed in your career.
Don't be over competitive
Being confident is very valuable when trying to impress employers at interview, but people are not always so happy to work alongside someone so competitive. Being motivated and performing well but also pay attention to "fitting in" socially, ensuring that you are not rubbing your colleagues up the wrong way with arrogance or self-importance.
Be honest
While everyone might expect you to be creative with the truth on your CV and in interview, it is not a good way to continue a career in auditing. Lies can soon get found out and come back to haunt you. Honesty is a highly respected quality in most places of work, and not something which is easy to earn, so make sure that you are trust worthy and that colleagues and associates can take you on your word.
Lighten up
When you start a new job it can be easy to focus too much on making a good impression, and end up seeming stressed out and robotic to fellow team members. It's important to have a good work ethic but it's also important to indulge in some pleasant, irrelevant conversation, often it's what makes working in a stressful environment bearable.
Admit mistakes
Unless you've been recruited for the Mr. Perfect role, everyone can be expected to make mistakes from time to time. It's how you deal with mistakes which sets great auditors apart from average ones. Don't cover up your mistakes; it will only make them worse. Admit your failings and work together to come up with the best solution.
Get the work/life balance right
Succeeding at work is important, but so is home life. If you are suffering in your private life, then it is likely that at some point it will effect your work. Likewise, if work is stressing you out it could ruin your home life. Getting the balance right and ensuring that you are paying enough attention to both parts of your life is the key to a fruitful and long career.
Do what you do best
Everyone has different levels of skills and abilities, and similarly their own unique weaknesses and failings. Identifying and making the best use of your skills will enhance your career development, and help those around you to do the work which best suits them. Don't try to be someone you are not, be honest with your employer and honest with yourself about what you are best at.
