Among the Montclair Schools, Montclair State University stands out as the only school of its kind in the town of Montclair New Jersey. It is located in Upper Montclair, and was established as the New Jersey Normal School of Montclair in 1908. This establishment came as a response to the demand for teachers who are professionally trained. Thus, it became the Montclair State Teachers College in 1927. Professional teachers were then trained under a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree program. It was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools as the first teacher’s school in 1937. In 1958, it merged with the Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene and became the Montclair State College. In 1994, it was renamed as the Montclair State University and was designated as a teaching university by the Board of Higher Education.

Today, Montclair State University is composed of seven colleges and schools. These are some of the Montclair Schools where one can graduate with a degree. Among these schools are the college of humanities and social sciences, the college of education and human services, the college of science and mathematics, the John J. Cali School of music, the school of business, the college of the arts and the graduate school.

The state university old campus is composed of the Russ hall, the College Hall, the Morehead Hall and the Chapin Hall. These were all built in the years from 1908 to 1928. Housing for returning soldiers were constructed near the end of the Second World War and from one of these buildings the broadcasting department was housed between 1950 and 1980. After this period, only one more building was added which was the Blanton Hall dormitory. Campus growth accelerated again in the 1990’s. Some of the more recent additions to the campus are the Dickson Hall in 1995, the Floyd hall Arena in 1998, the Science Hall in 1999 and the Red Hawk Diner in 2001. It was the first diner on Montclair schools and in the entire country.

Students who are enrolled in the university can be accommodated in several residence facilities that were built in the school. However, there are some parking problems which are caused by the increasing number of students at the university and the new constructions coupled with the limited expansion choices. Among the Montclair schools, it has maybe some of the better sports facilities found within the town.

In sports meets and competitions, you can distinguish the state university from among the various Montclair schools through its nickname; the red hawks. This was taken from the indigenous Red Tailed hawks that can be seen in the area. The school logo is made up of the state university red hawks printed in red, blue and white with a red hawk in a blue outline and wings and talons outstretched on top of the printed name. The university athletics belong to division three of the National College Athletics Association.
