"A place for everything and everything in its place" is a saying my Mother loved to use. My idea of a place for everything was my bedroom floor. I knew where it was and was happy to grab it when I needed it. Time progressed, I had my own home and suddenly a place for everything took on new meaning.
Here in Chicago the houses tend to be rather small, so finding that perfect place for every precious item can prove a challenge. We have very limited linen space; we have very limited garage space so we have to be careful about overstocking and storing too many things.
A solution to this problem can be self storage in Chicago, where there is secure, climatized storage space accessible 24 hours a day. That is an easy way to free up space in a garage and other areas of the house.
The other key is to throw away or give away the things that you haven't used in the last year, if you haven't used it in the last year, chances are you won't use it in the next year either, time to say good bye.
Getting rid of clutter feels fantastic. Nothing is as mentally healthy as getting rid of stuff. For valuables like antiques, documents, family heirlooms a storage unit might be a good idea. A garage sell is a fun way to make money, get rid of junk and meet the neighbors. One Saturday and your garage can be your again.
Just cleaning out cupboards and drawers adds lots of space in the house. Especially cleaning out closets with clothes that haven't been worn in decades, too big, too little, too outdated, too ugly. It is amazing how few clothes you actually have worn in the past year, donate the rest to a charity.
There are organizations that take outdated clothes in good shape and take them to third world countries. Win-win for everyone. You get closet space back, your garage back and your mental health back and other needy people get clothes.
Have the kids grown up and you're still storing all their toys and high school memorabilia? That is another great place to dejunk. Have a "kids come get your stuff night."
A place for everything and everything in its place, what a great goal. Maybe not totally doable but we sure can make strides in that direction. Good luck with it.
