With the Internet, satellites, cell phones, and more, it seems that paper maps have gone completely obsolete. Perhaps this is no more true than for boaters and mariners, whose voyage and very lives can depend on knowing exactly where they are at all times. It is one thing to be lost on the highway, and a completely different problem to be lost at sea. That is why any boater or sailer needs to have a quality marine GPS system that will keep them updated and protected in their voyages. Here are a few important considerations as you decide on the right GPS system for your craft.

First, have a clear idea for what type of boating you will do and thus what GPS features you will need. If you do not boat very much, you might look for a system that will double as a car GPS, helping you save money (though it will come with fewer features). Off-shore or river boating is less treacherous, but having a system with a reliable depth finder can be crucial.

For those that sail more frequently and in deeper, wider waters, it is essential that you find a reliable GPS with a chart and course-plotting system. By gauging your speed, angle, and time, these systems can help you judge how long it will take you to keep from one spot to the next or help you decide on the best route to take-invaluable information for oceanic sailing and boating.

You will also have to consider the physical components of the GPS system you are looking for. While car GPS systems mount pretty easily for most people, each boat has a different steering set-up and will require a specific type of GPS format. If you generally need both hands free while you steer, make sure you get a system that can mount to a stand so you can look at it while you are otherwise occupied. There are cheaper hand-held systems, though, if that works for you. Also, make sure you system has a good screen that can be viewed in the sunlight. Even if you steer mainly below deck, you will want an outdoor screen just in case you ever need to use it above deck.

By concentrating on these features and deciding on which are most important for your boat, you can help keep the costs down while finding the perfect marine GPS system.
