Not too long ago, I was called into a meeting to discuss some confidential business. I knew that the people that I would be meeting with were of questionable character and ethics, and that I would need to wear a hidden microphone to make sure that I had an accurate record of everything that was said and done.
I was pretty sure that they would be recording me as well, and I knew that they wouldn't be beyond altering their transcription or "rearranging" what was said at the meeting to make sure that it was all to their advantage. Since I don't have events like this regularly, I called a friend of mine, a doctor, and asked him if I could borrow his transcription digital recorder.
He knew the people that I would be meeting with, and asked if he could have a copy of the recording of the meeting. He has had treacherous dealings with them in the past as well, so he wanted to be sure he had the inside track on what happened during our meeting so as to not be caught unawares should he have to meet with them himself.
The meeting went as planned, and everything that transpired was relatively predictable. Sure enough, not too long after I heard through the grapevine that they were altering what was said, but it doesn't matter, because I have the original recording of the meeting as it took place, and once I can process it through an online transcription service, I can provide both text and audible copies of the whole proceeding to anyone who might need to have it, especially my legal counsel.
What I particularly relish is the fact that there is now a bona fide recording of these people discrediting themselves and then lying about what really happened afterwards. If they knew I was taping, I doubt that they would have been so candid, but what's done is done.
I love living in a day and age when a recording can be digitally created, emailed to an online transcription service, and a transcription returned with a high quality at a reasonable price. I've transcribed oral histories myself in the past, using tape media and a special device to slow down and rewind the tape, and it wasn't the easiest thing I have ever done. The Twenty-first Century has been kind to us, and technology has proven to be our greatest ally.
