These new Eco-friendly cutting boards are flying off the shelves. Prices can be priced moderately low up to $200. Don’t spend a fortune for a cutting board and not care for it properly. Here are some tips to help you keep it looking like new for a long time.
A few tips for caring for your cutting board is to wash in warm water, sponge it with detergent and sterilize. You can wash the cutting board with your other kitchenware but after around fifteen minutes you want to use some detergent on a sponge and wipe the board down. After cutting fresh meat, it is a good idea to bleach the board with one teaspoon of bleach for every gallon of water. Make sure that the board completely dries before putting away. This helps to keep bacteria from growing on the board.
When you are ready to use your board for the first time, use some food-grade mineral oil or Camellia oil. Camellia oil can improve the appearance of your cutting board to keep it looking like new. This special oil brings out the bamboo appearance. Then wipe with a soft cloth. Repeat this process as least once a month. After daily use, the oil will ward off bacteria also. Before you apply the oil, you want to warm it. Use low heat and a cotton cloth. Use some pressure when wiping the board with the oily cloth so the oil will penetrate the bamboo. Let it set out for about 20-25 minutes, then wipe with a clean and dry cloth and store. After years of use, one may consider having it resurfaced. This will make it last even longer. To ensure safe use, always make sure it is complete dry and clean of chemicals or oil.
Why go through all of these steps? Well, the surface of the bamboo cutting board absorbs water quickly. It can buckle and wear away quickly without proper care. Dishwashers are a no-no. They can increase the growth of bacteria in the cutting board and make stain-absorption easy. It is impossible to clean stained bamboo. Oiling of the board prevents staining and preserves the appearance.
Good care means getting the most out of your investment. It is a beautiful addition to any kitchen and you are showing you care about the environment by buying an Eco-friendly product. If you cannot care for it properly, it is best you stick the old wooden boards. Bamboo cutting boards are not for those who don’t have the time. It is worth the care.
