Summer storms and severe weather can easily cause power outages and make life difficult for you. Why not ensure that this won’t happen to you? Outages are happening more and more throughout cities all over the country. Because you rely on your electricity, power outages can cause chaos in your life. For added security, a back up generator can give you assurance and make you feel safe in these situations.

Generators have been around for years. Campers use portable generators to power electrical appliances and lights. A small portable generator can be useful around the home for short outages. But what about the ones that last for days or even weeks? The size of the home and the wattage for your appliances should be considered when going to purchase a generator.

If your home is large and you want to keep everything up and running, a whole house generator may be right for you. They look like huge air conditioner compressors. Whenever you lose power, they start up automatically. Sometimes there may be a few seconds delay until everything is back on. The power source is like a car’s engine. Gas or propane fuels them. Prices can vary up to thousands of dollars. You decide what it is worth to have this type of back up for your home.

The choices can be confusing because there are so many different ones to choose from. A generator with a 10,000-watt range is a good first choice. It can serve a refrigerator, washer, dryer, computer and televisions. These models may start around $1000 or higher.

A useful generator comes with features such as an electric start, sizeable gas tank, hour meter and the auto shutoff. A large tank eliminates the need to constantly refuel the generator when you are using for longer lengths of time. Some other really inexpensive generators cost between $300 to $400. These may include the portable ones mentioned previously.

Safety must be considered when using generators because of the hazards when using any flammable liquids. Also generators produce carbon monoxide which is very deadly and kills quickly. Where you decide to put your generator is of the utmost importance. Do not install inside any closed in areas. Generators should be operated outside of the home at all times.

The answer to the question of “Why do we need back up generators? - simple. For convenience and comfort. Power outages are no fun. Maintain your comfort inside of your home with a back up generator.
