Make Christmas Eve a game night. This is something some families do on a regular basis during the year; however, if you are not a family that gets a lot of quality time; the Christmas holiday presents a great opportunity. Play games your family hasn't played in a while or if you don't have any buy one and start a fun new holiday tradition. The fun of competition and being with each other will become a highly anticipated event. Some great suggestions are Scrabble, Clue, and Monopoly.
Make Christmas Eve a karaoke night. Even if you do not have a karaoke machine, just having a night where the entire family sings carols together can be a fun activity. You don't have to stick with traditional carols either. You can mix it up with songs from your family's favorite artists' Holiday CDs. So your kids can rock out to favorite artist such as the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus singing holiday tunes. This is an awesome way for fun to be had by all.
Try to make fun treats such as gingerbread men or gingerbread houses. The recipes should be relatively inexpensive to make and should also provide a delicious and beautiful holiday decoration. All that needs to be added is some icing and candy to make it a holiday marvel. You can also make other traditional holiday treats. If you are worried about how much it would cost try to look for recipes that use cheaper ingredients that are just as good. In this case researching recipes online is a good idea.
You can also try making homemade decorations and tree ornaments. It does doesn't take much. You just need some materials that you can find at Wal-Mart or your local arts and crafts store and some good direction. You and your family will be surprised at some of the beautiful items that you will find yourself able to create.
Something special you can do with your younger kids is having them receive a special letter from Santa. This is a great idea if your kids have written to Santa with their requests for Christmas.
