It is not usual for squirrels to attack bird feeders for food and especially in the winter or colder months. Bird lovers have experienced squirrels and their thievery. Trying to keep your birdseed solely for the birds has become quite the chore. An effective solution has been found with the use of squirrel proof bird feeders.

The perfect location in your yard is where it will be almost impossible for a squirrel to reach it. You can try suspending it in a very high area. Poles are good only if the squirrel cannot climb the pole. A special squirrel proof feeder is intended for the purpose of stopping the squirrel from reaching and eating the seed. A squirrel proof feeder should be able to be placed anywhere. Some feeders have plastic domes or the topped is covered with plastic to simply stop the squirrel from taking the seed. Birds will still be able to get seed from the feeder but for a squirrel it will be impossible. Whenever a squirrel can hit or jump on a feeder, it does cause some seed to fall from the feeder. Some are even skilled at causing the feeder to tip and spill all of the seed.

This has lead to more expensive and complex feeders. The more sophisticated feeders can close the access to the seed when a heavier animal attempts to eat the seed. Some feeders have a cage that only allows smaller animals to come through the opening to the feeder. If the expensive feeders are out of your price range, you can resort to old-fashioned methods. Try changing the bird seed or bird food that you put in the feeder. Squirrels love birdseed but hate safflower seeds. This will discourage them from returning to the feeder. Greasy poles cause squirrels to slip off the poles and again discouraging the attempt to get to the birdseed.

Another way would be to block the squirrel from climbing into the bird feeder by creating a blockade. Your blockade can be made up of potted plant pots. You can also try hanging the bird feeder from a wire with baffles that stop the squirrels from running across or scurrying.

You can always consult more experience bird watchers and professionals before buying a feeder. Whether you decide on the new squirrel proof feeder or traditional methods, you will be able to once again enjoy birds and bird watching. You will also save money on buying birdseed.
