True bird watchers and bird lovers use bird feeders as part of their outdoor landscape in hopes of spying rare and beautiful birds. You also have squirrels as a constant and menacing part of your backyard landscape. Squirrel proof bird feeders can make your attempts at bird feeding and bird watching a success.

Squirrels are hungry little pesky critters that have to eat up to two pounds of food weekly. They are always on the hunt for food and if you have a bird feeder, they have probably raiding it for the bird food. They are climbers and jumpers and can access many high places. Squirrels can jump across an opening of at least ten feet and five feet off the ground. Trees make it even easier for them to gain access to difficult areas. You must make it harder for these cunning creatures to reach your bird feeder.

You must think location and which feeders are the finest on the market to stop these annoying squirrels. If you decide to use a pole to hang your feeder from, you must make it hard for the squirrel to get up the pole. A suspended feeder could work but squirrels can chew through the twine and the feeder will fall. The purpose is to stop the squirrel from getting to the seed. There are some feeders that have cages that only allow small birds to entry to the seed. This can hinder larger birds but will keep squirrels out.

Some of the more advanced squirrel proof feeders use a trigger or weight-activated part that closes the access to the food. Another method of deterring squirrels is a spinner that flings the animal from the feeder but causing no harm to it. It is rather entertaining to see. Squirrels have a variety of food preferences; they will eat almost any seed. But thistle seed, pure suet and safflower seed is not included on their menu. If you like squirrels and don’t want to go to the trouble or trying some of the methods discussed, you could buy a squirrel feeder.

Professionals are always willing to answer questions and your neighbor may be able to assist you in deciding whether to purchase a squirrel proof bird feeder. We know that squirrels are always going to be around so how you handle them is your choice. A squirrel proof bird feeder does do what it is supposed to do and you can start enjoying your birds again.
