In their attempt to get to the seed in the feeder, squirrels can scare birds away and cause damage to the feeder. Not to mention eat all of the seed that is intended for the birds. For birdwatchers, this can be aggravating and may cost more than expected.
If the feeder is close to a tree, you can bet that squirrels will try to attack your feeder. Squirrels are more comfortable near trees and bushed rather than out in clear areas. You can try placing the bird feeder in an open and exposed area to make it harder for the squirrels to gain access to the feeder. But squirrels do climb and they can climb poles too. If you thought that hanging a feeder from a pole, you may want to reconsider the thought. To make it a challenge for squirrels to climb the poles, some have tried painting the poles Milano red. Why Milano red? For some odd reason squirrels do not like that particular color. This color is available at many hardware stores and home improvement centers. Painting the pole will not affect the birds or distract them away for the feeder.
A cheaper and possible other alternative could be wrapping wire around the feeder which stop the squirrels from getting to the food because they are too large to fit through the wire. Birds will have an easier time reaching the food. Others have tried a squirrel guard that prohibits squirrels from getting to the feeder. This can be used when your feeder is attached or hanging from a pole. The squirrel guard is a circular apparatus that attaches to the pole. You want to place the guard about five feet from ground level. Be aware of surrounding trees when using the guard. Also a tubular bird feeder can make it difficult for the squirrel to reach the food.
You can miscellaneous ways that you can ward off squirrels and some work and some do not. A last resort could be a squirrel proof bird feeder. You will worry less about location, painting, and guards. The different designs can use various options that can stop squirrels from getting in the feeder. A feeder similar to the tubular one mentioned is the dome-shaped feeder. This feeder keeps the squirrel from securing footage on the feeder so he falls off of it and cannot attain the seed.
You may want to do further research and see what your choices are. Ask neighbors or friends which squirrel proof bird feeder they prefer and choose one perfect for you.
