Trading back links function like this. You have to put your link to your site on someone else’s site and they will then be able to put their website link on your site. It is a link swap. But, there has been loads of controversy about these types of links.

Do they perform there role to help improve your rank in the search engines? Do they harm your page rank? Is it worth taking part in them? To give you an answer to these questions, lets take a moment to consider both sides of the situation. After all is said and done, for most online business owners, is the fact that they are able of helping you.

Some reasons why reciprocal links may not be helpful. When mutual links first began to be employed, it was a trade off between one website owner and another. If you were skillful in a home decorating business, for example, it will be beneficial to join with and receive a back link to a company that provides windows. Both parties would benefit from a link exchange.

At first when the site owners utilized this theory, they found that their sites did in fact rank better in the search engine results. As a matter of fact, it operate so well that they went out and attempted to find more and more link trades.

And because of this caused the problem. Instead of working with other web masters to build a professional relationship and create a reciprocal link that rewarded both people, a lot site owners found that they could buy these links instead of working to build them.

And now, they didn't need to go to the difficulty of luring in those that they would like to get links from, rather, they could just purchase them. Okay, this isn't such a bad thing, right? The trouble was that site owners were buying and utilizing thousands of reciprocal links for their web page. This is entirely unnatural and it simply didn’t work out good for them.

But why did it change? The search engine algorithm's soon became wise to this scheme of how to get your website to rank higher. So the major search engines built programs that would spot this technique and the fact that individuals that were utilizing this huge amount of reciprocal links in this manner, were ranked WORSE!
