A tapestry is a fabric art that has been around for centuries. Tapestry has been extended to pillows, table runners, mats, handbags, and more but were originally designed to hang from the wall. Many were hand-woven but through the passage of time are now being created by advanced machinery. Advanced technology can created these wonderful works quickly and in larger numbers. It also simplifies the method of weaving and can mass-produce some of the same designs effortlessly.
The tapestry designs are available in matter different subjects and styles. Cityscapes and country scenes, flowers, hunting scenes, medieval scenes and castles are just a few. You can choose cultural themes such as Asian, European or Oriental designs and well as religious themes. Romance is also another popular theme that has seemed to be in more demand than ever before. These are also known as pastoral tapestries. Most are depicted with couples that are engaged in different activities such as conversation and courtship. Romantic themes peaked in the 17th century through the 19th century.
Feelings of love and warmth exude from these works of art and capture the onlooker. Some of the settings were colorful like gardens, nature’s landscapes or oceans. Most jovial settings were beaches and parks. Lovers would be dining outside and having picnics in the park or garden. Secret love was depicted with lovers’ sneaking away to be alone to kiss in the moonlight. To help set the tone, the people portrayed were happy or seemed to be cheerful. The atmosphere of any room with the tapestry design as such would surely take on the personality of the models in the artwork.
Romantic theme tapestry designs were often displayed in the private places of one’s home such at the master bedroom or master bath. Some considered that art ever erotic and sensual. A Grecian bathhouse or the boudoir of beautiful women would have been the perfect setting for such designs. Most royalty used tapestry hangings in their homes to display wealth. Other designs were chosen for other parts of the castle or home. Most often during cold months, this tapestry hanging would be place over windows to keep rooms warm.
Asian or Oriental theme tapestry design can also enhance a room with the similar theme. The possibilities to decorate with tapestry are endless and you can use your imagination to create your special room. It is up to you but it will make a lasting impression on those who visit your home.
