When it comes to maintaining physical fitness and health levels, enhancing cardiovascular health and strengthening the heart aerobics has proven to be incredibly effective. The same as any other muscle the heart could be made stronger through physical exercise such as aerobic exercise which raises the heart rate, consequently making it work harder.
On one side of the spectrum you have aerobics, and the other side anaerobics . While anaerobics are also effective in improving and maintaining cardiovascular health it tends to also produce more injuries as the body grows older. And many fitness enthusiasts will opt for aerobic workout as it tends to be gentler on the body.
Aerobics is anything physical activity that elevates the heart rate and that can be done continuously (non-stop) for roughly 15-20 minutes or more such as walking, jogging, biking, swimming, etc.. Anaerobic activity is short 15-30 second all out bursts followed by recovery. While both are great for improving and maintaining cardio-vascular health many athletes, especially older fitness enthusiasts and those people who are prone to injury tend to favor aerobic exercise. Anaerobic workouts raises the heart rate higher, while aerobic workouts raises the heart rate for a longer period of time. And both are very effective in helping to maintain a strong and healthy heart.
While any physical activity that elevates the heart rate for an extended time will help to keep the cardiovascular system strong it's also important to eat the right foods and maintain a healthy lifestyle. While your body may be able to handle not being physically fit and eating junk foods in your 20's and 30's while it's still young and strong, it might be a different story as you grow older. When you reach your 50's and 60's and your body begins to weaken, after decades of abusing your health and body it will begin to catch up with you.
Working on some type of physical activity such as aerobic exercise keeps the "engine" running strong. However, lots of people find that modifying their lifestyle and eating habits go hand in hand with starting some sort of physical fitness program.
A lot of people exercise at fitness clubs or with a companion and it helps them to get motivated. Or, many people would rather exercise by themselves and do it almost religiously and use it as time to be alone in their thoughts or to kind of meditate while while exercising. Either way, what is important is to "Just Do It". And whenever you're having trouble keeping motivated or just getting a workout started keep in mind that the work you are doing today will pay off in spades in your older years.
