If you are unsure as to whether you are ready to quit smoking or not, there are a number of different ways that you may be able to tell. Many people have succumbed to the belief that quitting is too hard and that they don't have the willpower to be able to complete the task, but the fact is that if you believe you will never be able to quit, then you're right. Quitting is more about willpower than anything else and learning to develop the amount of control that you have over yourself.

For some people, they realize that it's time for them to quit when they get up in the morning and notice that they grab a cigarette before they grab a cup of coffee. Or they have coughing fits throughout the day that end in them being red faced and out of breath.

Others decide it's time to quit when they try to physically exert themselves in ways that they haven't had to in a long time, such as moving furniture or trying to go to the gym for the first time in years.

Or maybe it's time to quit when your kids are constantly hounding you about how bad smoking is for you. When you tell them to never start smoking and they say “why don't you stop”, it may be time to rethink your strategy for quitting altogether.

Money could also be a factor; when you add up your receipts for cigarettes at the end of the month and you realize that you've spent over $150 just on the habit, it could be a big wake up call.

Quitting isn't an easy thing to do, but once you decide that it's something that you must do for yourself and your family, there are a number of ways to follow through with it.

Quitting gradually is an option for most people and banning yourself from smoking in one particular place at a time is a great way to do this. Tell yourself that there's no more smoking in your bedroom or your living room and give yourself time to get adjusted to that. Move on to the next room that you smoke the most (or the least, depending on how you want to do this) and get used to not smoking there. Eventually, you will run out of places to smoke, as long as you have the self control to prevent yourself from breaking your own rules.
