For people who have been smoking for years, the reasons to stop smoking are known, but in many cases aren't fully understood. “Smoking is bad for your health”, say the masses, but the fact is that smoking may be a lot worse for you than you might think. Smoking carries the same risks for everyone, but some risks may be worse for some than others.
Smoking destroys your lungs and contrary to popular belief, the nicotine isn't what causes lung cancer. In fact, nicotine doesn't have much to do with your lungs at all. Nicotine is a stimulant and while it can cause your blood pressure to rise, trying to link it to lung cancer is a stretch to say the least. What causes lung cancer is the combusted tobacco, the ash, being inhaled into your lungs and held there. The ash is deposited into your lungs and it paralyzes the cilia so your lungs can't clean themselves.
Now, consider the fact that when you're smoking, you're not only subjecting yourself to this fate, but you're also doing it to everyone around you, including your friends, family, children, and even your pets. It's not their choice to smoke and in the case of children and pets, they don't have a choice but to be around you on a daily basis.
The next thing to think about is your wallet. Smoking, like drinking alcohol, is an expensive, unforgiving habit. Most people who smoke use at least a pack a day; others use even more than that. Considering the cost of a pack of cigarettes is, on average, at least $5 and even more for “premium” brands, that translates to around $150 a month on just cigarettes. If you smoke 2 packs a day, it's closer to $300 a month. Seriously, save the receipts from every single time you buy cigarettes and add them up at the end of the month. Then, you'll have a good idea about how much you spend a month on cigarettes on average.
Lastly, consider personal hygiene in this situation. Smoke sticks to everything it touches, including your hair, clothes, furniture, and even the upholstery in your car. It causes your teeth to turn yellow and your hair to stink. Ashtrays scattered everywhere doesn't help the smell of your home, either. It's almost like placing stinky, scented candles around the house.
