We have all heard of the “Drink a pint of water before you go out and a pint before bed.” And we’ve heard of a good old fry up the morning after, which is often seen as the top method. But I have a few facts that will help you make up your mind. The best method is prevention, obviously, and that is always better than a cure. If you don’t want a hangover then don’t drink. It’s as simple as that. But if you know before going out that you are going to drink then there are a few things you can do to make your chances of getting a hangover lower.
Make sure you got a lot to eat before going out for a night of drinking. A meal high in fat is highly recommended to prevent hangovers. This would be the only time a meal with such high fat should be eaten though, and it should not be done everyday. Fatty foods are digested slower, meaning that they can help prevent the lining of the stomach becoming irritated by all the alcohol.
Try to avoid drinks that contain larger amounts of “congeners” Drinks that contain high levels of the substance are usually darker: drinks like, port, dark rum, brandy, and red wine. Those drinks are also well known to cause a more severe hangover.
Drinking a carbon-less soft drink or water between each alcoholic drink is recommended by many, but it is a bit of a myth. In all actuality, you drink less alcohol because of the volumes of soft drink and end up with just a smaller hangover. I really think that it’s just a way of “kidding yourself” and it’s really not a true hangover cure. Alcohol is known to cause dehydration, and in short, you get headache symptoms with hangovers. Drinking more water will reduce the dehydration and therefore, the hangover headache.
Vitamin C is a good way of encouraging your body to speed up metabolism. Your liver will work faster to deal with the alcohol in your blood. A good source of Vitamin C is fresh-squeezed orange juice. Along with raising your vitamin C levels, raising your blood sugar by eating food is also a really good idea. This will give your body more energy and help you feel better. Getting a lot of sleep is a good, natural way to cure a hangover. Your system works hard to clear your body of the alcohol, so sometimes it’s best just to sleep it off.
In the morning, drinking more alcohol is known to reduce the hangover effect. However, realistically it’s just putting off the pain, so it’s not recommended, especially if you can’t put yourself in a situation where you are able to drink the next day.
So overall, natural juices, food, and water are the best ways to prevent or cure a hangover. This goes hand-in-hand with allowing your body to get on and rid itself of the alcohol. But, as I stated before, the best way to prevent a hangover is just to not drink at all. If that isn’t an option, however, then consider preventing the hangover with natural cures.
