Promoting a organizational (.org) site is different from others because being a org site we cannot put banners or popup's of other sites and usually these organizations do not spend much on the promotion of website. Search engines: Search engines are the most effective way to promote your site. From survey it has been found that about 80 per cent of people use search engine to find site of their purpose. Therefore, why should not utilize these visitors. You should submit your site to as many search engines, as you can.
Reciprocal links still play a significant role when it comes to ranking high with the search engines. The more links that point to your site from other websites and vice-versa the better. To the search engines, each incoming link counts as a vote for your ranking. The higher a site ranks, the more it is worth. Important is also that these sites are similar to yours. For example, if your site is built around learning hang-gliding lessons, you would want to get your link on sites that deal with hang gliding accessories, parts, vacations etc.
There is a simple and free technique that you can start using this minute to get tons of incoming links to your site. Firstly, open your favourite search engine and type in the following phrase with quotations marks: "fishing" "add url" . Hit the search button and the results will turn up numerous sites that allow you to add your website link to their directory. Some of these sites will add your link right away and some might require a reciprocal link which means you add their link to your site. Reciprocal links can also help your ranking by positioning you as an authority if you link to other quality, similar sites.
Apply this technique to you own site by substituting the keyword "fishing" with whatever keyword applies to you niche. To find even more sites that allow link submission, play around with different combinations of keywords in between the first set of quotation marks.
Examples: "fitness products" "add url", "adventure tours" "add url" etc. Next you can expand you search even more by replacing "add url" in between the second set of quotation marks with other phrases like "add link" or "submit a url" . Get creative and try every possible combination you can think of.
Invite webmasters of interesting sites to see your site and get a listing in their link page.
Submit pages of other websites where your website is registered to the search engines. It will increase your ranking in search engine.
The search engine logic is that the more similar sites are linked to your site, the better!
After some time you will feel that you had submitted your site to all the search engines, web directories, sites etc. At this point you should learn from your competitor sites. You should find the places where your competitor site is registered. To find this just search link: (eg. link: www.immaculator.com) in any search engine like google and it will give you the list of the pages where it is registered. What else you need? -- Register your site to all these pages.

Search engines take time to analysis sites. But you can speed up this process by creating sitemaps of each of your website and submit them to Google and Yahoo for speedy indexing. It really helps :o)
