Your internal body clock is mixed up when you enter a different time zone and try to sleep when your body is use to being awake. The further away you travel can cause your symptoms to be worse. If you travel eight hours away or a few hours different your body clock gets confused. You can control it and get it back on track by trying to sleep on the plane. You can block out noise with earplugs and any light with eye masks. This will offset the change by a few hours and it won’t affect your body clock drastically. You can enjoy your trip sooner and without feeling horrible.
You should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration that will lessen the symptoms of jet lag. If you like you can bring your own water and make sure to continue to drink water after you land. You won’t regret it. Some people like catching the red eye to avoid interruptions in sleep. You can sleep more naturally and you won’t need sleeping pills. Coffee, alcohol or drugs can intensify jet lag. If you do drink anything that contains caffeine, make sure to follow it with lots of water. The plane ride can cause some dehydration as well.
When you land and arrive at your destination, try staying awake until dark. You want to switch your body clock to the new time so that the body can use the Melatonin in the body to help you sleep naturally. You should do anything possible to wear yourself out so that you will sleep at the appropriate time in the new time zone. Sightseeing, walking, and coffee can help you remain alert and stimulate your senses. When night falls you will be too exhausted to stay awake and should fall asleep immediately. After a good night’s sleep you will be ready to tackle the next day ready and alert. Also on your first day, try eating snacks or small meals throughout the day to break up your regular routine.
