Okay, so this opinion won't be essentially the most popular. However please, do not crucify me. I am a very good dad. I received my kids all of the toys my spouse discovered to help the youngsters’ "development." You recognize, educational toys. The type you have to drive twenty miles out of your solution to tiny retailer in a strip mall in West Nowhere to find, or order from some obscure catalog or website based mostly in Canada.
And believe me, I am glad my youngsters have issues like mini computer systems that train spelling and math, crystal-growing science undertaking kits, reminiscence games, puzzle cubes and downside-fixing pc CD-ROMs. However I generally surprise, when I see those toys strewn all over the front room ground, abandoned and uncared for whereas Katie and little Mitch are sticking balls of Foolish Putty in their ears, perhaps youngsters should have some toys just for enjoyable and nothing else?
After all, after I was a kid we did not have all this stuff. We had little pink wagons and toy cowboy pistols. We had Lincoln Logs, Matchbox vehicles, building blocks and our imaginations. I can remember a summer after I was 6 when my solely new toy was a stick my dad helped me turn right into a fishing pole. And that kept me busy seven days a week!
I'll tell you this much. I would reasonably see my kids play with a toy that they enjoy, that conjures up them to run round and have fun and explore the world than some "instructional" toy that they'll sit around enjoying with for a couple of hours till they tire of it and by no means touch it again.
Heck, I'd even fairly see them chase one another around the again yard with toy guns than sit inside with some pseudo-egghead puzzle or game that is purported to make me feel better about spending fifty bucks!
You possibly can’t open a newspaper or turn on a TV news program with out any person saying that in the present day’s children are obese and inactive. And I see it all the time. My kids’ pals come over to play and I can’t assist but notice that a variety of them are fairly chubby. And they come from good households, not the sort the place the dad and mom are feeding them Twinkies and plopping them in entrance of the TV for hours at a time. However a lot of these youngsters are coming over and enjoying with our “educational” laptop math games, and just sitting on their butts!
This is what I’d prefer to see. I’d like people to let go of this idea that a toy has to be clearly “educational” for it to be worthwhile. I’d like people to think about other components, like if the toy will get our youngsters transferring round and taking part in actively, or if it would turn them into little couch potatoes. I’d like folks to consider whether or not their children will actually benefit from the toy, or whether it'll sit untouched.
Let’s put away all these foolish ideas about what’s right for our youngsters and just them be youngsters and have fun the old school way.
