Several owners believe that their cat is just too unresponsive to listen. Many owners feel that their cats are untrainable simply because they are independent and headstrong. To put it simply pets fail to obey because they don't understand what it is that you want from them. If you have attempted to teach your cat, you may not be doing it correctly.
Good Kitty:
Training your cat takes time and patience. It takes more of that then it does with a dog. A sure way to achieve results is to use positive reinforcement. Try not to scold your kitty as he is more likely to misbehave when you are not there. Rather, praise good behaviour. Any cat can learn. It is wise to first start when the pet is young, about eight to ten weeks old. However, the pet will do well at any age.
How is it possible to get started?
When in the process of training your cat the first thing to start with is for your cat to come when called. Hold a cat's treat and simply call his name. You'll want to ensure that your cat is in a postive frame of mind. Try to make sure that there isn't a great deal of noise. Distractions will only slow down tha cat or befuddle him. Decide on one command and use it solely. The direction should be short and easy to say. For example, here kitty or come kitty work extremely well. Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Verbalise the command. Ensure that the tone of your voice is happy and excited. When the cat comes to you, reward him with the treat. Insure that you praise and reward your cat. Then, try moving away and do the same thing again. Try and use the same tone of voice and the same direction. Work on it for no more than ten minutes. If the kitty is frustrated por bored, stop for the time being. Try to do this two or three times a day for about a week. Once he gets this command, you can move on to others.
There are many things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are needed to teach all cats. For example, he needs to learn to accept a harness and leash in case you are required to travel with him. Furthermore, your cat should learn to use a carry crate.
A Harness and Leash:
To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain your cat once it is place. Praise him for it. Reward your kitty with a treat for responding so well. Once he is used to wearing it, attach the leash to it and let him lead you throughout the area. Attempt to coax your cat into following you with treats and praise. Many cats will learn to heel on the leash. But, most will not. They should learn not to struggle or panic whilst wearing the lead.
The Crate:
When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats love warm dark spaces and so placing a comfortable blanket or even a favourite toy inside the cat's crate. Give him praise when you place him in it. Try leaving your cat there for a few minutes. Let him out within three to five minutes. Don’t praise him when he’s coming out of the crate because you do not want him to think this is the good thing. Make sure to reward him, though whenever he goes in. Each time try leaving the cat in the crate a little longer. Your cat will eventually be trained well enough to keep him there.
These simple hints and tips may show you how useful it can be to give your cat a little discipline.
