If you would like to have a tool that acts like a road map for your employee's growth in skills and abilities for the next year you have come to the right place. A tool that provides employee engagement and employee motivation is to create an Employee Development Plan with each of your employees. One of the strongest motivators for employees is to believe they can achieve a brighter future with your company.
Employee Development Plan
Here are some steps to take to facilitate this process:
* At the beginning of your business' fiscal year, sit down with each employee and interview him. This is a good time to ask him what his long term goals are with the company. Does he want to go into management? Does he want to go into sales? Does he prefer office work, project work. etc? Also you tell him what you think would be good training or education for him based on how you think he fits in best with your company. The training on the Employee Development Plan will be designed to lead him toward this goal (as long as it is in the best interests of the company).
* The training could be in house training or some training that is available locally.
* This Employee Development Plan is basically a contract between you and the employee (providing funds are available and no unforeseen circumstances occur that make it hard to complete).
* You do not have to agree to everything or anything that the employee wants if you do not think this is best for the employee and the company. You have the veto power.
* After you have come to an agreement, You write down on the Employee Development Plan for that year exactly what training will be given ( onsite or offsite), when it will happen and/or when it must be completed and you both sign the “contract”.
Win-Win
The benefit to you as a manager, is to find out exactly what the employee's long term goals are with your company and if you think the goals are appropriate, gently lead your employee toward those goals by helping him obtain the training, skill development, etc to reach those goals. If you do not think his long term goals are appropriate, suggest options you think are better for the company and him.
The benefit for the employee is he is being given the training he needs to have better skills for his current position and training for better jobs in the company that could probably lead to promotions and/or raises.
Planning for professional growth of an employee gives him good reason to be very motivated in his job and stay working for your company as he can see a brighter future with your company. Employee retention and job satisfaction will increase.
