When TV systems are used for out of home advertising, it is known as digital signage. Usually non-standard commercial televisions are used for digital signage campaigns are run indoors in locations like retail units or stores. As more and more people start to take advantage of this low cost method of advertising, however, more and more digital systems are being taken outside or to other areas in need of projection.
Outdoor signage is becoming the factor growing part of this new market, and for good reason. The projected audience for an outdoor signage is whole lots greater than the number of people that would walk through a store in a day. For that reason alone, there has been a huge rise in the number of digital screens being placed outdoors. Commercial plasmas and LCD TVs are designed for use in indoor areas, such as living room, bedroom, etc., and they usually can't cope with outside elements. Waterproof LCD TVs are one solution for outdoor locations, but due to their high cost, it is difficult to justify, especially when the return investment on the digital signage is very hard to calculate.
Usually, outdoor LCD enclosures are made to protect the standard commercial TV set. The cabinet allows the TV to be protected from weather elements, and assure no water or outside substances can get inside. Other kinds of protection for outdoor TV sets have also been considered. TV screens are not only very vulnerable to direct sunlight, which can cause hotspots on the screen that can permanently damage the screen and make it difficult to read. Anti-glare glass coverings for the LCD screens will ensure that the TV will have maximum readability in bright sunlight, while an air curtain, that flows through the screen and will prevent hotspots.
Another application that requires protection is the Industrial Digital Signage department. Industrial areas are much more hostile for the use of LCD and plasma TVs. Industrial areas contain water, as well as other liquids, some of which are corrosive. Dust is also a concern, as are heavy impacts and extreme temperatures. A LCD enclosure in an industrial area is also a useful means of protection. Manufactured by NEMA, they do offer waterproof protection, prevent all liquids from entering the enclosure, and also act as a dust tight enclosure, containing heating and cooling systems, and can withstand heavy impacts. The protection of the screen is just as important as the message you are trying to get to the consumers. You should make sure that it readable on the screen.
