If anyone has considered using a digital signage network for their business or service has a lot of options to weigh and think about, as well as a lot of research to do, before a project such as this one can be successfully implemented. Not every dynamic signage systems are created equal, so it certainly pays off better in the long run to explore all the options available before making a final decision.
First, one must decide on the required hardware. Most digital signage network are created using LCD or plasma TVs, which are usually hooked up to a computer with the capability of the internet, or to a DVD or CD player which can play various forms of media. How a system is configured depends on the need of the individual. Rarely is there ever a standard installation method.
Once hardware is chosen, then the placement of the hardware has to be considered. Whether it will be displayed indoors or outdoors, a digital advertising system is prone to theft and vandalism. Making sure that the electronic signage system is very well protected, usually by a secure enclosure, is an absolute must. Outdoor units have to be waterproof as well, so you will either have to have European IP65 or USA NEMA 4X standard. They are can be washed down with high-pressure water jets, but the internal hardware remains protected.
Many dynamic digital signage networks are run by computer software by way of the Internet. This is the reason the content is updated so quickly. Many software choices are available, but there are several things that should be examined when you are evaluating which software to use with the digital signage network. First is the software user-friendly and easy to configure? Will the software support all the media files you plan to use (video, sound, photos, etc.)? It is desirable that the software can successfully utilize all the major media formats. Will the software maintain a high level of security while connected to the Internet? Does the software have an effective system to monitor the unit at all times? Can updates be easily available if a company need change or grow? What kind of support is available if trouble occurs? Will the software run top-notch everyday of the year?
Digital signage can definitely increase the bottom line of all kinds of businesses. They are, however, not a cheap investment by any means, and for the system to be successful the whole system needs to be carefully planned and not rushed into.
