Camden is one of London’s hidden gems. Camden’s borough goes North from Covent Garden and Holborn through Kings Cross and Euston into the fashionable Camden Town area to the green and leafy Hampstead area.
Camden is comfortable quarter there are numerous pubs and restaurants that allow your dog to rest with you.
Camden is situated on the what was the manor of Cantelowes. The manor was acquired by marriage in the 1700s by Sir Charles Pratt a radical lawyer and politician who afterwards became the 1st Earl of Camden. He gave leases for over one thousand houses to be built in Camden in 1791.
In the early 1800s Regent’s Canal was built through Camden, going through the northern edge of Camden Town. Regent’s canal is very popular with dog walkers and cyclists. Summer boat trips are well liked. Until the 50s the canal barges were drawn by horses and the towropes etched into the handrails over the years and are still visible. There are still the ramps on the canal bank, not for boats, but to help the horses out of the canal. Macclesfield Bridge is the site where a barge with gunpowder blew up in 1874, London’s largest non war explosion. For most of Camden’s history it was not a fashionable area.
Camden Lock is a manually-operated working canal lock. Located near to it are some great weekend street markets. Camden’s markets are well known and exceptionally popular, the local small markets include Stables market, Buck Street market and Camden Canal market as well as the Electric Ballroom which is an indoor market. The markets sell all types of goods, including, lifestyle, fashion, books, junk, antiques and more bizarre items.
During the last few of decades artistic and entertainment businesses have moved into the area. Due to the increased wealth in the borough restaurants have gone from strength to strength. One of the earliest major venues was the Roundhouse, originally a locomotive train engine house constructed in 1850s around 1850, it evolved through a number of uses until it was turned into a music venue in the 60s. With a recent re-launch a few years ago.
The Camden area has a lot of parks for great dog walking, Primrose Hill, Regents Park, Kenwood Park, Parliament Hill and the massive Hampstead Heath to name the big ones, so many London dog walkers are based here such as Camden Dog Walking.
The Camden Borough was formed in the the 1960s by amalgamating the London boroughs of Holborn, St Pancreas and Hampstead.
The borough has an ethnically mixed population and whilst on the whole prosperous, who use Camden Doggie Day Care - as they are too busy, there are some less well off quarters.
Camden was and is the home to many artists, writers and politicians, that include the writers John Keats, Charles Dickens and Aldous Huxley, all types of politician from the politicians Benjamin Disraeli, Karl Marx, Frederick Engels and John Maynard Keynes.
