Tips to declutter your home can be interesting to read, but how do you know if they are really going to work? Only a short time ago,, I was your typical "clutter-bug". I kept everything, thinking that one day someone would need it, or that it would be valuable. Boxes lined the walls of my rooms (still from the last move), and knick-knacks covered the coffee tables to the point that to put down a drink, I would have to move something aside. The TV remote - lost. The carpet - nearly invisible. I knew I had to do something. And so I started working. I made myself declutter my home. I can proudly state that I am not a clutter bug any longer! And I believe that my own success can help you - here are some tips to declutter your home from somebody who knows what you're going through!
1. Use the clock to your advantage. If you have a pile of random papers, or a box full of who-knows-what, declutter it in 5 minutes. Give yourself ONLY that amount of time, and work as fast as you can. It is truly amazing how much you can throw out or put away in 5 minutes! This particularly helped me with my stacks of papers. 5 minutes didn't give me time to look over, re-read, or get distracted by the contents.
2. Invite over a carefully chosen guest. You know how there are certain friends or family members that you sort of want to impress? Well, use that to your advantage. Make your house a place you can be proud of, once again.
3. Give yourself a budget to work with. I found that my bathroom looked just too cluttered, so I bought several matching decorative boxes to put on my shelves, and the items that I needed to keep went into those boxes. The difference was impressive! Other items I purchased were a stand-alone pantry cupboard, which went in the playroom (it fits a TON of games, and hides the clutter when you close the doors), and under-the-bed storage containers.
4. Put up a large bulletin board, and neatly arrange all of your random photographs, cards, mementos, and what-not on it. This will organize the clutter on your fridge and mantel, and wherever else those photos seem to land.
There are several more tips to declutter your home that worked very well for me, but these four are my favorites, without which I would still have to label myself as a clutter-bug. I must say, I LOVE my house now that I have been able to get it all in order - and you will love yours too!
