It's another month, another week, another day... and it's time to begin the Decluttering Challenge! Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to come home to a spotless, orderly, peaceful house? Wouldn't it be brilliant to be cooking in a kitchen where all of your utensils are in their correct places, and where your counter tops sparkle and beg to be covered with home made cookies instead of clutter? Start yourself on a Declutter Challenge today! Unsure what a Decluttering Challenge is? Simply put, it is a challenge you assign yourself (and/or your family and friends) to get a large part of your home decluttered in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!
The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge
One kind of challenge is called the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the concept is that on every one of the 30 days of the month you decluttering one item or part of your house, great or little. The things can range from the middle shelf in your spare room closet to the toy bin in your son's play area, from your underwear drawer to the gift wrap bin that gets stuffed in the spare room closet. The most important thing is to be sensible with your chore assignment. Putting "put photographs accumulated from the last two years into photoalbums" in all probability won't be able to be done in a single afternoon, but perhaps "organize the pictures into piles or envelopes according to the occasion or person and dispose of photographs you don't want to keep" CAN be finished!
When your chores have been assigned, think about giving yourself a reward to look forward to once your 30 Day Challenge ends successfully! Yes, having a much less cluttered house will be a reward in itself, you can not deny that we work harder if we have something tangible to get from our efforts!
The One Week Declutter Challenge
A different kind of challenge will need you to assign one whole week to your challenge. This will be a serious "no one can distract me" week throughout which you free your schedule with the objective of gaining back what used to be your decluttered home. Every day, decide on one room, lock yourself inside it so to speak, and go to town! Garbage bins, boxes for donations and re-sell, and obviously some ordinary cleaning supplies are your necessities. Pull your spouse, your room-mate, or your children along with you! Remember, many hands make light work!
Perhaps you will see the need to cut back and assign yourself a One Week Bedroom Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Garage Declutter Challenge. Don't worry about it! Commit yourself to decluttering for seven days (and really, what is 7 days in the scheme of things), and you will surely bring order back to a good part of your chaotic home!
The 2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge
This type of Decluttering Challenge is a favorite. Commit yourself to decluttering (by throwing out, donating, or selling) 2010 things in the year 2010. That sounds like a lot of "stuff" doesn't it? If you do the math though, it is not too crazy at all. 2010 divided into 365 days is only 5.5 items daily. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard in the basement, your closet, the garage... that makes it seem more reasonable now, does it? Tick off your success on your calendar, and see the clutter melt away!
Yet one more way you could do the 2010 DeClutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... A great deal until you remember that there are 8,760 hours in one year! That's less than one 45 minute session per week! And yet 2010 minutes is sufficient to get a LOT clutter-free!
So, the "30 Day Declutter Challenge", the "One Week Decluttering Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge"... three excellent ways to start decluttering your home! Which challenge are you going to do?
