When writing children's books, the first stage in writing your book is usually the toughest. You will have no doubt convinced yourself that your idea for a book is certainly a winner, and now you just need to convert that inspiration into reality. But to be able to do that you will actually have to write it! This is where you often invent any number of reasons for not starting it "right at the moment".
So, what is the best way to go about it? Well, listed here are a handful of thoughts to help you get started.
1. Establish what is stopping you making a start.
Take a few moments and consider this. Make a list. Is it Work commitments? Family commitments? Social commitments? Possibly you are surrounded by distractions, or perhaps you just cannot stay motivated?
There's one simple approach to address this - lock your self away. This is a vital tactic. Block out at least 3 hours of your time and let all and sundry understand you can't be interrupted. Then remove all forms of interruption - turn off your mobile, your house phone, your e mail and anything else that may interrupt you.
Writing children's books needs commitment and the most important factor you'll be able to commit is your time. If you want your children's book to become a reality you must do this.
2. Have a plan
Set yourself some goals. Say to yourself 'This week I'll finalize the outline for my book.' This may appear daunting, but once you commit yourself to doing it you'll be delighted with your self once it comes true. However don't stop there, make sure that you now set another specific target, and have a list of additional targets either written down (ideally), or at the very least, in mind.
3. Maintain a journal of progress
On a daily basis write a brief sentence saying what you've accomplished, then you'll have a physical record in front of you and verification that you are actually making progress. Read through your diary at regular intervals, particularly in case you are finding it difficult to keep motivated.
4. If all else fails
If you just can't get started or are struggling with author's block there's one method that can help. Simply write! Get a clean piece of paper in your hands and simply start writing - anything. It could be complete garbage to start with but it is going to start the inventive machine and you'll be surprised how quickly your writing gets on track and your book gets started.
With any luck this short article may have given you a few ideas and drive for beginning that much awaited children's book.
I wish you every success with your future career as a children's book writer.
