The nifty 50s was one swell decade. Bobby socks, Brylcream, poodle skirts, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe - come on! - what's not to like about this idyllic era? Well, ok, maybe the bathing suits left a little to be desired. But, no question about it, the summer vacations themselves were legendary. Home-cooked meals in the veranda, clean and tidy beaches, friendly neighbors, evening games, towels drying on the picket fence; what memories! And perhaps the best part? No Blackberrys, iPhones, or email. One could really, and I mean, really, unwind. Well the 50s are back - Welcome to Veranda Beach.
Unquestionably, the developers at Veranda Beach, a "vintage" lakeside cottage resort on Lake Osoyoos, got it right. It's a picture-perfect place to escape the rat race. Woven wonderfully throughout Veranda Beach is a charming 1950s theme. It's reminiscent of a simpler time... a time when, through the banging of the screen door, children's laughter echoed, milkshakes were the order of the day, friends socialized around the barbeque, and the sound of crickets and water lapping on the beach lulled you to sleep at night. A vacation at Veranda Beach takes you back in time, back to this much needed reprieve.
Located on a mile of sandy beach, Veranda Beach, which is in the heart of the sun-drenched Okanogan region in Oroville WA, just minutes from Osoyoos and the Canadian border, continues to expand and settle into its idyllic little niche. Beautiful new cottages - you know, the "perfect" kind, splashed with color, adorned with white picket fences and, yes, spacious verandas! - have been built. The private, soft-sand, south-facing beach is better than ever. The popular 50s diner has been relaunched with a new name and is offering many new items. Of course, your favorites - onion rings, awesome burgers, homemade milkshakes, and the famous rootbeer float - are still staples. After all, a true 1950s theme wouldn't be complete without them!
In a lot of ways, the diner, now called Globe at the Beach, could be considered the centerpiece of the property. It's a great place to chill, slick back your hair, and toss a few coins in the jukebox. Kids love it (especially the treats in the adjoining general store!) and adults love the Fonzarelli feel and cool vibe. Located at the Village Center, Globe at the Beach takes its name from Globe Café & Tapas Bar at Big White and Sun Peaks, two alpine resorts located further up the road near Kelowna and Kamloops. Globe at the Beach owners Jude Brunt and Paul Doherty have tweaked their "Globe" culinary concept and brought it to Veranda. And why not? Just like the 50s, it's a good thing. And "good things," of course, were the order of the day in the 50s.
Interestingly, Brunt and Doherty have spent plenty of time travelling abroad, experiencing cuisine from around the world. And, thankfully - for existing home owners at Veranda, beach vacation goers and those who will soon to discover this place! - they have brought many "global" culinary ideas to Veranda. There are specialty coffees from Italy, a wider selection of boutique wines and beers, and special chef's creations from around the world. Of course, utilizing fresh local ingredients from the nearby bounty - the Okanogan is one of the finest growing regions in the world! - is a priority. In addition, Globe will offer many special themed events featuring cuisines from around the world.
Speaking of feasting, the incredibly scenic drive to Veranda Beach is definitely a smorgasbord for the eyes, especially in spring when the entire Okanagan explodes in colorful blossoms. Indeed, springtime at Veranda Beach is a special time. Not only is it a time of great promise for the upcoming holiday season, for the many exciting events close at hand, but it's a great time to reconsider how you recreate. Going back in time to the nifty 50s at Veranda Beach is a great place to start that process.
