Canvas prints are becoming more and more popular way of decorating our homes. Good quality canvas prints are surely making our walls a lot more appealing and original. Canvas print will usually be an ideal gift to most people - as they are very unique and personalized. This is a very special moment when they open a box and proudly hang the canvas on the wall. But it can be very depressing and sad moment if you have not chosen the right company to produce your canvas. I have heard lots of stories from people actually quite sad where the canvas simply didn’t stand up to the expectations.
Understandably there is a lot of interest in canvas prints.
One thing that makes them so in demand is the fact that when produced in a professional way they will last for a long time.
Original Epson inks are designed to last over 100 years. Sealed with museum grade varnish will last even a lot more than that. When you come to create a canvas prints from your beloved photos you want them to last. Unlike standard prints which would normally have a lifespan up to 20 years, canvas prints can actually easily last decades. When choosing the right company to order canvas prints make sure to take the following into consideration:
- archival and original inks,
- archival canvas media,
- protective varnish
- profiled stretcher bars with wedges
- colour calibrated workflow
These are the most important things to look out for. There is a lot of companies to choose from. And trust me - they do differ in how they adopt the above conditions. As in any other business some companies are trying to cut the costs to maximize their profits. But this will always be by using cheaper and less professional materials. Of course technology is becoming more and more affordable and there is more and more people that are trying to produce canvas prints. Unfortunately experience and knowledge is not as simple to gain. Even Adobe applications are making it quite simple. One easy way to distinguish between professionals and ‘cowboys’ in canvas photo printing is the usage of colour calibrated workflow. I came across people printing without any knowledge and even idea which options to choose in the printer dialog. Honestly these people are wasting their money and clients in order to produce random effects. The goal is to be able to reproduce colours in best possible way for the printer. I will cover this in a separate article, enough to say that it truly makes a difference. There is a few different colour calibrated workflows available from different vendors. Some of them are more designed for proofing and only recently started fully support RGB workflow. New Epson printers can also be bundled with Colorburst rip which produces great outputs. Also printing directly from Adobe Photoshop is an option but only if combined with custom colour profile. The downside of this approach is that images have to be printed separately resulting in not efficient usage of the canvas media.
