For most of my life I didn't know anything about the embarrassing condition of puffy areolas}.

It was approximately 7 years ago that I initially observed that some guys suffered with them when I decided to re-train as a Fitness Coach. I had enjoyed working in the world of sales for thirty years, usually self-employed and regularly worked 60+ hours every week as a matter of course.

I had, nonetheless, always thought it important to stay in good physical shape in spite of putting in these kind of hours. With this background I considered that I would be the ideal man to advise and assist hard-working guys to attain fitness.
My thinking was right as I have since motivated many busy individuals to re-schedule their time so that they could fit in regular, focussed training sessions, thus improving not only their physical fitness but their mind too.

As I mentioned above, I had just not been aware of men's chest issues but in my role as a Fitness Advisor I now was. Initially I thought that the problem was simply an excess of fatty tissue and lack of muscular tissue that was the problem but when some of them confessed to me that they were suffering from tender, puffy areolas as well, I made up my mind to look into the issue of unwanted male breast growth.

I soon discovered that this condition of puffy areolae is common in individuals suffering from gynecomastia, is generally known as 'puffy nipples' and that men have had these issues since time immemorial. I have seen pictures and statues of Ancient Egyptians with breasts.

Although gynecomastia can indicate a build-up of glandular tissue all over the male breast, quite often this excess tissue is situated just beneath the the areolae area. The result is a dome-like area which is not at all manly to look at and therefore becomes a quite embarrassing issue for any individual.

I first met the puffy areola problem with two clients, one of whom was a businessman aged 50 or so and the other who was a retired gentleman over 60, so I automatically concluded that this was a problem occurring in men. I soon discovered that it wasn't! I also had one or two younger members in our Gym talking to me because I had built up a good reputation.
During the process of educating myself on the Internet about gynecomastia, I discovered that numbers of young guys in the 14 to 16 year old age group were also looking for advice on breast problems. They would have been better advised to book in to see their doctor for a qualified diagnosis but in the UK and the USA it seems that guys prefer to make the physician their last port of call! Therefore, I always say to any guy with these sort of chest issues, book in to see your doctor at the outset.

Many overweight and obese guys have a build-up of just fat on their breast area without any build-up of glandular tissue and this is called false gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia. When an individual has his doctor's confirmation of this, he can, with the right mindset and the help of his Fitness Advisor, get results reasonably quickly. That is to say, lose the fatty tissue and replace it with muscle.

It is likely, however, that any individual who actually has puffy areolas, whether he is overweight or not, has true gynecomastia. Young males invariably grow out of it once their hormonal balance is settled, after two or three years.

All other males will need to undertake all tests, evaluations etc. that their physician requires to ascertain the underlying cause or causes. I have detailed the main causes below:

*Puberty very often brings with it gynecomastia as a consequence of the hormonal balance being affected during the maturing process but fortunately the condition disappears in 2 to 3 years.

*{Conversely, one of the delights of growing older is a lowering of testosterone production leading to gynecomastia|Conversely, from the 50's onwards, a lot of men {suffer from|experience} a decrease in testosterone production and this can cause gynecomastia|A lot of guys seem to get gynecomastia from their 50's onwards due to a decrease in the manufacture of testosterone}.

*Some prescription drugs, medicines, creams and ointments will alter liver function which may produce feminising effects.

*{In a few younger guys the consumption of meat or milk from estrogen-treated livestock has been proven to trigger gynecomastia|In the last few years it has been proved that meat or milk from estrogen-treated cattle, pigs etc. can trigger gynecomastia in young men and boys|Some younger males have developed gynecomastia simply by consuming milk or meat from animals treated with estrogen.

*Marijuana use over a period of time will also affect the balance of androgen and estrogen.

*It comes as a surprise to many bodybuilders that they start developing female characteristics on their chests after taking anabolic steroids for some time. This is the result of a chemical reaction called 'aromatization' which transforms the excess testosterone into the female hormone estrogen.

*{Drinking too much alcohol for prolonged spells can also upset hormonal equilibrium and give rise to gynecomastia|Heavy alcohol consumption for lengthy periods will also change hormonal equilibrium and result in feminine-looking breast growth|Males who lapse into the habit of drinking too much alcohol {stand a good chance of|may well find that they are} developing gynecomastia due to the fact that the androgen/estrogen balance has been destroyed}.

*Tumours of the Testes.

*Cancer of the adrenal glands near the kidneys.

*People with hermaphroditism having male and female organs.

*Kleinfelter's Syndrome, a rare condition in which a man has an extra 'X' chromosome.

*Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, a name applied to a number of disorders caused by various enzyme deficiencies.

Medication may or may not be required to restore hormonal equilibrium but a revised lifetyle, a healthy diet and a proper exercise schedule, will assist greatly in helping a man build a masculine, sculpted chest and enable him to kiss goodbye to his feminine-looking breasts and puffy areolas.

I did unearth a handful of natural approaches which address the puffy nipple problem and can therefore suggest one to consider. Cliff Manchaster, who developed the Chest Coach System, had suffered for sixteen years with puffy areolas before developing his own curative system and, in so doing, surprising his own physician. the methods are dietary, lifestyle, herbal and exercise based and there seem to have been many men who have benefitted.

Charles Churchill, 68 years young Fitness Instructor.
In addition to being a Fitness Professional, I have been a gym user for over 40 years. During this time I have inspired and trained many men to achieve vastly improved Cardio-vascular fitness and, more importantly to them, a stronger and more toned body. Lots of these men had puffy areolas usually associated with the dreaded 'man boobs'. The latter were, as I now know, due to either gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia, so all of this puts me in a unique position when helping men with all chest problems and giving advice on Lifestyle, Diet, Exercise and the ability to properly evaluate products designed to help with them.
