When writing children's books, the first step in creating your book is often the trickiest. You have no doubt convinced your self that your idea for a book is definitely a winner, and now you just need to translate that inspiration into reality. But in an effort to do that you will actually have to write it! Cue the little voice in your ear saying "I don't have time, I can do it tomorrow, Just take the dog for a walk first" and so on.
So, what's the easiest way to go about it? Well, here are a number of thoughts to help you get started.
1. Determine what is stopping you making a start.
Take some time and think about this. Make a list. Is it Job commitments? Family commitments? Social commitments? Possibly you're surrounded by distractions, or perhaps you simply can't stay focused?
There's one easy technique to address this - lock your self away. This is an important approach. Block out not less than 3 hours of your time and let everyone know you can't be interrupted. Then remove all forms of interruption - turn off your mobile, your home phone, your e-mail and anything else that might interrupt you.
Writing children's books demands dedication and an important thing you can commit is your time. If you want your kid's book to become a reality you must do this.
2. Have a plan
Set yourself some goals. Say to yourself 'This week I will finish the outline for my book.' This may appear daunting, however once you commit yourself to doing it you'll be delighted with yourself once it comes true. However do not stop there, make sure that you now set another specific target, and have a list of further targets either written down (preferably), or at the very least, in mind.
3. Maintain a diary of achievement
On a daily basis write a brief sentence saying what you've achieved, then you will have a physical record in front of you and proof that you're actually making progress. Scan through your diary at frequent intervals, especially if you're finding it difficult to keep motivated.
4. If everything else fails
In the event you simply can't get started or are suffering from author's block I have found one approach that may be of assistance. Simply write! Take a clean sheet of paper in your hands and just begin writing - anything. It might be complete garbage to start with but it is going to begin the artistic machine and you'll be amazed how soon your writing gets on track and your book will get started.
With any luck this information might have given you a few concepts and drive for starting that long awaited children's book.
I wish you every success with your career as a children's book writer.
