New puppies are a source of fun and pure joy. But at the same time you will experience some frustration. While everyone loves a puppy, no one is thrilled about potty training a new pet. Where do you start? What is the best method? Here are some tips to help you potty train your new puppy without tearing your hair out!

One of the most important things you need to remember before you start potty training is that a puppy is just like a little child. Think of you puppy as a two year old toddler. They love to explore and discover new things, plus they are just starting to understand how things work and all about obedience. But, they have a very short attention span and are easily distracted. They are testing their boundaries and learning what is acceptable and what isn’t. In addition, puppies just like toddlers tend to be forgetful. They won’t remember what you taught them about going potty after one lesson. It will take repetitive training and quite a bit of patience on your part. But in the long run it will be rewarding and help to build a bond of trust between you and your pet.

Probably the most important thing to remember when potty training your puppy is to do it with love and patience. You want to maintain trust and a positive relationship with your dog. If you are harsh or punish your puppy, it will cause the dog to fear you and then you will have more behavior issues to deal with. Training your dog in a positive manner will help to build your relationship as well as create a good training environment.

When you begin training your puppy it is important to maintain a set schedule for eating and potty time. By feeding your puppy twice a day at the same time, you will help his digestive system follow the timing of your potty training. In addition to creating a schedule for the dog’s internal system, you are giving the puppy a sense of structure. Dogs like routine and they learn to expect things at certain times. If you feed the dog and then take them for a walk at a set time after eating, they will learn to expect it. This will help them learn to go potty after eating.

Use a treat system for rewarding your dog. Give you puppy a little treat or play with them for a while after they go potty. By using rewards for positive behavior you will establish happiness with good behavior. On the flip side, don’t hit your dog when they have an accident. Just like small children, they don’t really understand what they did wrong. Tell them in a loving voice that it was wrong and then continue to reward positive behavior. Hitting your dog or rubbing their nose in their mess will just cause them to fear you and can create more behavior problems.

Plan to take your dogs for long walks. Dogs love exercise and just like people they need it to keep their bodies running well. Plus, dogs are very social and going for a walk with you helps to build a companionship that will last for years.

Potty training you dog will not happen overnight and it will not be easy. But when you consider the long relationship you plan to have with your pet, the amount of time it will take to properly train your dog with love and patience will be worth it.
