Scientists, individual organizations [AHA or Alzheimer's Foundation for example] and governmental agencies agree that fish oil heart supplements are helpful. Many consumers already know this but have some related questions - Is there such a thing as a "heart" product? Should it cost more? What sort of quantities are necessary?
Back in the 1970s a group of Danish researchers studied Greenland Eskimos and found they had almost no cardiovascular disease or arthritis, despite a high fat diet. Almost thirty years later the Hibbeln study looked at countries all over the world. They found that there was a solid fish oil heart connection. The more fish that was in the diet, the less heart disease. For instance Japan had 30 times less disease than the US and Western Europe.
They and subsequent studies also found that people with depression were more likely to have heart attacks. Even worse, their survival rate was much lower.
I think you are seeing a pattern here. Different parts of the world, different cultures, even different diseases - all helped by the oil of different species of fish. Let's concentrate on the cardiovascular system.
What is in fish oil heart supplements?
The same ingredients as natural fish oil - two omega 3 essential fatty acids - DHA and EPA. These are occasionally referred to [with apologies to Batman and Robin] as the "dynamic duo of health." An enormous amount of medical literature testifies to the fact that these two omega 3s help maintain the elasticity of artery walls, prevent blood clotting, reduce blood pressure [slightly] and stabilize rhythm.
I eat fish occasionally. Am I getting enough omega 3s?
Probably not. This is why the fish oil heart supplement market is growing so fast. It is estimated that 85% -99 % of people in the Western world are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and most get far too much of the omega 6 fatty acids.
Another way of looking at this is that vegetable oils are loaded with omega 6s. They come from cooking, processed foods. salad dressings etc. Typical Western diets are not balanced by an equal amount of DHA and EPA.
This imbalance throws our immune systems out of whack all the way down to the cell membranes. This means our bodies are grossly inefficient. Think of a car engine running on the wrong kind of oil. It will work, but with time, gets slower and sludgy until it finally seizes up.
In human terms, this is known as a stroke or heart attack.
What fish oil heart supplement should I take?
A regular, quality product. You do not need one with a fancy name. It is the EPA and DHA that our bodies needs. Both the American Heart Association and the FDA are okay with daily doses up to three grams. They believe you should at least check with your doctor for anything higher. They also strongly suggest that you get a pollutant free supplement.
