Are you ready to do something about those exorbitant gas and electric bills every month? Many people don't consider installing their own home solar energy systems and often it's due to misconceptions they have about residential solar panels. Let's look at five myths about home solar panels and remove them as reasons to not convert your home.
1) "Residential solar power is expensive, it will take thirty years to recoup the costs." It costs very little to install solar power in a home if you build your own solar panels. A solar panel diagram is really very simple and almost anyone can build one. But suppose you do have a commercial system installed. If you finance the costs, your monthly bill is still likely to be less than your electric bill is now.
2) "Solar panels are heavy, my roof will cave in." Not true - the actual photovoltaic panels that go up on the roof are very light weight. They are constructed of materials like silicon wafers, aluminum and glass and they are flat so their weight is distributed over a large area. In addition, they are easy to install.
3) "The panels will keep sun from hitting my roof and it will be colder in winter." Actually, the solar cells will add an additional layer of insulation to your roof. The extra covering will save as much as 30% on heating expenses.
4) "The maintenance of a solar system would be a nuisance." Since solar panels have no moving parts, there's almost nothing to go wrong and maintenance amounts to little or none. Think about it, satellites in space use solar systems for power in an environment that ranges from boiling hot to freezing cold and problems are next to nil.
5) "The panels will mess up my roof." What's the sun doing to your roof right now? The fact is, solar panels will protect your roof from harmful UV rays and help your roof last longer.
There aren't many reasons left to not convert your home to solar power and there are more reasons than ever to do it. Here's one more, you can shut all the power in the house off for two weeks next winter when you take the money you saved on electricity all year and use in for a trip to the Caribbean. Be sure to send the neighbors a post card.
