Women (and men) of America. Cleaning your house is a serious business. It's easy to think that house cleaning is simple and should be over fast, but not so.
Your commitment to cleaning your house tells the world about you, but more important it tells your children about you as well, and you're their role model.
Often the way you clean your house is an expression of how you were brought up. Did mom keep a neat and clean house? Then there's a reasonable chance that you will too, because we learn from how mom (and dad) did things. We learn our domestic skills from them.
But some of us didn't have house proud dads or moms, and so we didn't have a role model for how to do things well, like running a household.
Either because mom and dad didn't care that much, or because they never really learned the skills from their parents.
I make sure that my kids are involved in all aspects of running the home. They complain of course, but I still have them drying dishes, vacuuming the house or cooking the meals. And they have to do the tasks to earn their pocket money.
And I believe that making sure the kids know how to run a household properly is an important, no essential, skill for them to learn. As important as many other of life's skills.
I think that one of the most important things that any child can learn is to cook, and so many kids now don't learn. Certainly you have to start them small when young, but if they do then you can have them cooking simple things quite young. And they usually love it and can progress easily to cooking full meals.
I have been eternally grateful that my own parents taught me to cook and that's a skill that has been very important to me for my whole life. Even though I'm a man I do house cleaning and cooking and more, because my parents showed me how to do it.
All children admire their parents and look to them for a lead. If they see you using your skills at housekeeping meticulously, and even better if you teach them good housekeeping skills, they've learned some essential life skills that they will value for years.
But if you keep a house that looks like a 14 year old's bedroom, if you can't cook sufficiently to invite guests for dinner, if you're embarrassed by the state of your home so that you don't even want to invite guests for dinner, then your kids will, most likely, be the same.
I've spent quite some time considering this. Recently I've put together a list of lots of small tips and tricks that are useful for anyone who needs to learn more about house cleaning. The sorts of things that so many of us learned from our moms, but so many didn't.
The sorts of things that millions of women, and men, all around our country need to learn. It's easy when you know how, but if you don't then someone has to teach you.
So remember, if you're a parent, one of the most important things you can do for your kids is to help them learn the importance of, and skills of, housekeeping. It's your duty as a good mom or dad.
