A lot of guys who suffer from gynecomastia tend to develop puffy nipples or, in medical terminology, 'areolas' or alternatively 'areolae'. The word 'gynecomastia' itself is of Greek derivation as many medical and biological words are. So...
'gyne'= woman
'mastos'= breast.
This condition of feminine-like breasts or nipples can affect boys and men, right up to the very senior amongst us and, no matter what the age of the individual concerned, gives rise to a lot of mental anguish and embarrassment. As mentioned, I have helped a number of guys in the gym who have this nipple problem, firstly by encouraging them to go see their physician to make sure of the condition and later by working with them in the gym. It is always difficult, isn't it for guys to discuss any kind of medical issue and even more so when they have the embarrassment of puffy nipples but it is absolutely necessary for any man with the condition of puffy nipples to get medical confirmation quickly, so any help from someone like me has to be good.
For those adolescent males who have the problem, 93% will see it disappear within 3 years, as soon as the hormones stabilise. For the remaining 7% the cause of the condition can be found fairly easily by your physician. The treatments may well include adjustments of a nutritional or lifestyle nature and/or medical measures to tackle the hormonal imbalance lying at the root of those puffy nipples.
The two hormones in question are Androgen and Estrogen, with Estrogen being the feminising one and obviously present in too large a quantity than is normal or with the Androgen hormone being too low in relation to estrogen. In other words, the regular balance of the two is upset.
There are other possible causes for mature guys:
Drugs and medicines which are prescribed for other conditions can occasionally upset hormonal balance.
Hormonal equilibrium can also be thrown into disarray by regular use of anabolic steroids.
Marijuana abuse will also trigger hormonal imbalance giving rise to feminine-looking breast tissue, particularly under the areolae.
Consuming alcohol to excess will, over time, have feminizing effects.
As men grow older, the chance of getting gynecomastia increases, increasingly so over 60.
There are a lot of other possible causes, some serious in themselves, where gynecomastia is an extra effect. These are dealt with elsewhere on my website 'The Best Chest Guide' but those above tend to be the more usual causes of male puffy nipples.
A lot of men develop poor posture in an effort to hide their condition or just wear baggy sweaters and 'T'-shirts. A whole industry of compression undergarment manufacture has grown up, with vests etc. costing $100 to $200 each. In fact, literally dozens of companies have sprung up to cater for this need!
It is not necessary to resort to liposuction or surgery, which can cost up to $8500!
At the end of the day a remedy has to be looked for and there are other drug-free, natural approaches. For those of you that want to find out more, I have put up lots more information on my website, all designed to help cure those large puffy nipples.

In addition to being a Fitness Professional, I have been a gym user for over 40 years. During this time I have inspired and trained many men to achieve vastly improved Cardio-vascular fitness and, more importantly to them, a stronger and more toned body. Lots of these men had chest issues either with a narrow chest, a concave chest or with the dreaded 'puffy nipples'. The latter were, as I now know, due to either gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia, so all of this puts me in a unique position when helping men with all chest problems and giving advice on Lifestyle, Diet, Exercise and the ability to properly evaluate products designed to help with them.
