Much has changed in the area of effective wrinkle creams even over the past 5 years. These include the newer peptide creams that recently become very popular, as well as, older retinoids like Retin A and Renova and even the exfoliants that have gotten a lot of attention over the past 10 - 15 years like glycolic acid and salicylic acid.
There are also the issues of toners and astringents. For all intents and purposes, they really are the same. A problem some people fall into is a routine that involves washing their face, then applying a toner or astringent followed by a sunscreen or moisteriser - that's the problem. You shouldn't put toners 'on'. Toners are used to remove things from the skin. The toner itself is not a chemical that you should leave on the skin. If you want your sunscreens, anti-oxidants, exfoliants or any other active ingredients to do the same thing every time we use them then we have to ensure that the skin is prepared the same way for their application every time.
Preparing the skin involves 2 steps:
A cleanser and a toner.
They are both used to remove things from the skin - dirt, oil, impurities etc. and after you've used your cleanser, you then use your toner to wipe away anything else that has been left behind including perhaps some residual cleanser. You can think of the cleanser and the toner as the one-two punch in preparing the skin for other things.
Wrinkles are caused primarily by a loss of collagen and the material in the skin that the collagen sits in which is called a semi-liquid matrix (think of jell-o with fruit - the fruit is suspended in the jell-o). In this example the fruit is the collagen and the jell-o is the semi-liquid matrix and as you lose either of these components in the skin, the skin loses volume and it sags and falls in - this is what causes a line or a wrinkle.
Most effective anti-wrinkle creams work on the same basis - they all make the body produce more of this collagen or of the semi-liquid matrix. Both of which occupy volume and prevent the skin from falling in and causing wrinkles. Even though people in their 20's typically do not have wrinkles it may surprise you to know that they are already losing collagen and the associated matrix material that floats it, they just haven't hit critical mass because you don't see the line or wrinkle. Starting to use these anti wrinkle products at an earlier age can delay the onset or worsening or existing lines and wrinkles by a number of years.
Whenever you are going to experience them either through genetics, sun exposure, diet, smoking etc you will delay the onset of them because you will be producing material that helps to fight their occurrence. You can think of it as preventative maintenance for your skin and start it early!
