Are you a senior; have you retired and found that you are having trouble making ends meet? With today's economy, many of us are asking these questions.

Gas prices continue to increase. Heating costs continue to go up. Electricity is getting more expensive. Medical care costs continue to rise. All of these items continue to be considered necessary by the average family. Yet, if you are a senior, you are probably on an unchanging income like most of us.

I'm a senior - I'm 69 years old. I've been retired for about five years. I'm on Social Security and receive a pension. My wife, who is also 69, still works to supplement our income.

I've worked hard all of my life and earned sufficient income to live a secure life. Now, I'm seeing monetary problems; I thought I was OK for retirement and could continue to live the way of life that I was used to. Guess again.

Let me disclose some personal situations. I've had two surgeries in the past two years - Total cost $150,000. Even though I am covered by my Medicare and Supplemental Insurance, I still have to pay approximately $9000 per year for Medical Insurance and this does not take in deductibles and co-pays. A short time ago, I had dental problems; a new partial for five teeth - total cost $6500. I do not have dental insurance. I heat my house with oil; oil prices have continued to increase along with gas prices.

I'm just about to the point where I'm living from paycheck to paycheck. I was doing that when I was young and just beginning to work. This is not right. I asked the question "How can I help myself to improve my financial situation?

There is help out there for seniors; I finally decided to start doing some research. Following are a couple of suggestions I discovered that helped me save some money:

1) Although I don't have dental insurance, I discovered a dental discount plan; I purchased it for myself and my wife for an annual cost of $179.95. I saved $1970 on my dental costs.

2) One more tip - I wanted to rent a car for a few days for vacation. I looked at a number of car rental sites. I found that if you wait until a day before you need the car, you can rent one for nearly half the cost.

Every year our Government gives away hundreds of millions of dollars in cash, goods, and services to seniors. I've been able to get into many money saving suggestions for seniors and I've already been successful in improving my financial situation.
