Lately, the number of products that say they prevent human body inflammation has increased dramatically. Some of them are anti-inflammatory drugs, supplements and various additives to anything from dairy products to baked goods. The reason that this is worth noting is that we would not live very long without the bodies inflammatory response to disease. Are the people who take these products hurting their health, or are they on to something?
Acute inflammation is the short term immune response by the body in cases of trauma, infection and even allergies. For instance, if you cut your self, a host of white blood cells are rushed to the scene. They surround the infected area and isolate it from the rest of the body. This results in the normal swelling and soreness that we associate with healing.
When our bodies are nutritionally balanced, this response occurs just as it should, releasing pro-inflammatory compounds when needed and stopping them as the healing is finished.
Great. What is the problem?
Have you ever had guests to your party that would not leave in a timely manner? In the real world, we would call this "over staying their welcome." In the nutritional world, this is referred to as "chronic human body inflammation." The white blood cells and other chemicals hang around fighting non-existent problems. This would also include healthy cells in the area.
Depending on where this occurs will help determine the problem. In the -
1] Blood vessel linings - atherosclerosis and more heart disease
2] Joints - rheumatoid arthritis
3] Eyes - various visual problems
4] Brain - ADD, Alzheimer's, cognitive impairment, depression
What can be done?
The first thing is to realize that most inflammation is a symptom of a problem caused by a nutritional deficiency. Too many doctors still think it is a disease that needs a pile of drugs to cure. This attitude is slowly changing but old ways die hard.
Think of it this way. The human body inflammation problems, that I mentioned earlier, hardly existed 100 years ago. What changed? Not our bodies, but our diet.
Our immune system is a delicate balance of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fats. The Western diet of processed foods, vegetable oils and everything based on them [salad dressings, baked goods, margarines etc.] insure that we have enough omega 6s. A lack of grass fed beef, leafy greens and fatty fish in the same diet, insure that we do not have enough omega 3s.
Things have gotten seriously out of kilter. The FDA now recommends adding 2-3 grams per day of the omega 3s found in fish oil to our diet. This is just for health maintenance. Other experts recommend more.
This subject is covered by numerous research studies. If you spend time reading them, two things can happen. 1] Your insomnia will be cured and 2] you will know that there are there are natural ways to balance human body inflammation.
