Most motor vehicles come fitted with a standard sound system. This would usually be a front loader radio and the factory fitted speakers. It is widely common, however, for people to fit new sound systems into their motor vehicles. Some people install MP3 players into their vehicles, so that they can play music normal CD players cannot play. Other people take it to the next level, installing expensive amplifiers and sub woofers in their vehicles. In some cases, changes even need to be made to the vehicle to give way for the sound system. DVD players installed in motor vehicles are becoming more and more popular, with screens being placed in the back of the headrests.

Regardless of the sound system installed in your car, you need to ensure that it is insured. Sound systems can be very expensive, costing a lot of money to purchase and install. When you take out a comprehensive car insurance policy, your standard sound system will usually be included in the deal. This means that the insurance company will usually only pay out for the repairs to the regular sound system that was factory fitted. If you have installed any other sound system attributes then you will have to contact your insurance company. The insurance company will then evaluate your vehicle and all the added extras that you have put into it. They will have a certain costing system dependant on your new sound system. Naturally, your premium will increase due to the increased sound in your vehicle. The more sound you have, the more you will pay. It is also important to bear in mind that sound systems make your vehicle more of a theft target, and therefore the premium will be higher on a vehicle with a fancy sound system.

It is important that you contact your insurance company when you install your new car sound. The insurance company adds amounts onto your policy regarding the extras you have added onto your policy. This includes other installations like racing seats or engine modifications. When they pay out, they will pay out a specific amount for each sound item. You need to decide how much excess you will be willing to pay for each item. If any of the items does break, it may be in your best interests to simply pay for the replacement or repairs yourself, as the cost of the excess and the effect on your premium may not be viable for the claim itself.

Naturally, as with any insurance policy, you need to shop around and compile some quotes before you make your final decision. See if you can find an affordable solution for your insurance premium before you settle on one insurance company. You may find that your current car insurance company wants to charge you a lot more for your installed sound system than another insurance company. In this case you might find it logical to move to another insurance company that will offer you a lower overall premium.
